Filipinos all over the world are connected one way or another so whatever’s happening in the Philippines essentially affects or has an impact even over those living many miles away.
That should explain why a couple of California-based Filipino-born musicians would meet up in a room in downtown Los Angeles to seriously record an anthemic composition called “Sa Mga Lumalaban Nang Patas,” a new tune obviously related to what’s going on in their motherland.

Record producer-singer-songwriter Ted Reyes initiated high fives after tracking the vocals of his good friend Yugel Losorata, a writer-musician who had released a couple of his originals as a newbie in the US prior to recording this composition which he penned after he got aware of the apparent corruption scheme in the Philippines that allegedly involved government agencies, elected officials, and certain unscrupulous individuals. By now this dirty tactic has become a hot topic in the news and social media, leading to massive street protests.
“Some people have lost their moral compass or were not taught what it means to have integrity. For those who still or will forever have these essential life guides, this song is for them,” shared the multi-hyphenated talent who moved to the US partly to continue pursuing his passion for writing and music.
“Sa Mga Lumalaban Nang Patas” is a fresh record out under the L.A-based NSFU Publishing which Reyes had established to help distribute and push songs by artists with Filipino roots. It is essentially a collaborative project with Losorata, who wrote the inspired melody and lyrics, singing the song, and Reyes devotedly arranging and producing the track.
The result is a record powered by good-recall melody, strong message, and a modern, minimalist arrangement that fitted well to Losorata’s impassioned singing.
“Malakas ang potential nito. Great song,” Reyes noted.
Losorata, using the artist name YUGEL, previously released the songs “Hosanna Kapiling Ka” and “Stranded Man.” He and Reyes, buddies in their youth, reconnected in L.A after, by coincidence, he flew to what is dubbed as La La Land, while the latter moved from New York -around the same time.
Back in the Philippines, Reyes, the songwriter behind the now-classic Himig Handog finalist “Bye Bye Na,” fronted for The Freesouls which released an album, Shindig, with its hit lead single of the same name, under major label BMG Pilipinas.
Here in the US since 2001, he is now a solo act, with his latest album Trip Sa Field also a new package to check out for.
After starting his music life with a college band that fronted for The Freesouls in some gigs during the 90s, Losorata, as chief songwriter and bass player, led his own recording groups Syato, and later The Pub Forties, before he flew to the US amid the pandemic.
“Sa Mga Lumalaban Nang Patas” is out on all streaming platforms. The single artwork was created by the composer’s animator-brother Rockefeller Losorata.
